Penn State news, notes, and updates for May 8 include a new post-spring top 25 from a top college football analyst, headlines of the day, and more.

It’s time to dive into Wednesday’s top tweets and headlines about the Nittany Lions and college athletics.

Penn State tweets of the day

We start with a new post-spring top 25. FOX’s top color commentator, Joel Klatt, put Penn State at No. 9 in his latest rundown of the top teams in college football before spring practice begins.

“This was the year that Penn State has circled for a long time. Drew Allar, third year,” Klatt said on ‘The Joel Klatt Show: A college footbal podcast, according to a transcript from On3’s Kaiden Smith. “Nick Singleton, third year. Kaytron Allen, third year. Abdul Carter, third year.

“This was a recruiting class that they felt like could get them back to the playoff. Now that was a playoff that they thought was going to be four teams, now it’s 12, and I think most assuredly that they are a playoff-contending team.”

Klatt, who put Ohio State at No. 1 and Georgia, Texas, Oregon, and Ole Miss at Nos. 2-5, respectively, is hardly alone in putting the Lions inside of the top 10 at this early juncture. According to a recent post-spring practice roundup from Statecollege.com, at least five different publications agree with the former Colorado quarterback. In a different post-spring top 25, Ari Wasserman of The Athletic put the Nittany Lions at No. 11 on Tuesday. He writes in part: “Penn State might benefit from the expanded CFP, but we still have to ask the question: Can Franklin ever turn a good team into a great one? Can the Nittany Lions ever get over the hump?”

Penn State will have to earn its ranking on the field, of course. The 2024 season is now just 116 days away, as the Lions meet West Virginia in Morgantown on Aug. 31. A kick time and television network assignment is not yet available.

Quote of the day

“Penn State is another team where I really love the coaching staff, especially Coach Howle. I mean, we’ve been connected now for the past year and a half. He’s the one who pretty much got me on the radar, if that makes sense, when I went to a Penn State camp. So, we’ve been connected for a while now. Out of any coach I’ve been talking to, he’s probably the one I’m most comfortable with.”
