On3 recruiting insider Ryan Snyder joins the BWI Daily Edition to talk about just where the Nittany Lions stands in several vital areas heading into the final month before the early signing period.
Why is On3 Different?
A significant change to the show and Blue White Illustrated’s recruiting coverage took place this week with our switch to On3, the newest recruiting site in high school and college sports. Host Thomas Frank Carr and Snyder talk about what you should expect from On3 and how they plan to take high school scouting and recruiting coverage to the next level.
One of the most significant changes from On3 is just the sheer amount of information and interactive data that fans can access through their recruiting database. Snyder breaks down how many ways you can view a player in terms of historical perspective, high school prestige and even which coaches are recruiting him.
They also cover how On3 is changing the way class rankings work. The new system gives a real-time picture of where any given school projects to finish, not just where they rank at the moment. For example, On3 ranks Penn State differently in their overall team rankings than other sites. Snyder explains the difference and why he’s been pushing for this type of ranking system for years now.

Penn State Hot Boards
Next, they get into Snyder’s recruiting hot boards for the 2023 class. He goes through each position on offense and picks out some interesting nuggets at each, including how an injury has changed the picture for one tight end recruit.
That conversation turns at the offensive line, as T-Frank wants to know why Penn State has so many linemen in the Class of 2022. Is it simply that there were a larger number of good players available? Or is this offensive line coach Phil Trautwein aggressively going after upgrades in his position group to change the depth chart drastically? Snyder and T-Frank give their thoughts and how the 2022 class is affected by 2023.
Snyder also says that he’s seen the first evidence of the James Franklin rumors influencing recruiting this week.
They wrap up the recruiting portion of the show by discussing a mailbag question from Ryan’s Friday feature. Which positions are the hardest to recruit? Which positional groups are the hardest to scout? Ryan spoke to several recruiters to get their thoughts on the question, and T-Frank gives his thoughts on the scouting aspect of the question.
