Penn State redshirt report: One freshman misses the trip, another plays game two at Wisconsin
Penn State took numerous freshmen with it to Camp Randall Stadium for last Saturday’s Big Ten matchup with Wisconsin. Some played for the seventh time this year, another saw action for just the second time, and one notable Class of 2024 signee did not make the trip for the 28-13 triumph.
“A couple things to jump out to me right away, just a gutsy win on the road against a team that’s really trending in a real positive direction, tough environment to play in,” Lions coach James Franklin said. “Just a gutsy win. You lose your starting quarterback, you lose your starting d-end, you lose your start in the offensive tackle. Next man up. No excuses. I just thought it was a gutsy, culture win, from my perspective … the other thing that stood out to me is unselfish team and unselfish players.”
Here’s a look at this week’s redshirt report.
Penn State redshirt report: Wisconsin
After playing in three games already this season, it was obvious to wonder if Quinton Martin Jr., would play in his fourth this week and thus put him on the threshold to keep a year of eligibility or burn his redshirt. But, that did not ultimately matter, as the Penn State running back was not on the trip and listed as OUT on the team’s availability report. He appears to be dealing with some sort of injury, though Franklin was not asked about him after the win. And he was not seen at practice this past Wednesday.
With Martin Jr., out, Wisconsin native and running back Corey Smith made the trip but did not see game action. One freshman who did for just the second time this season is defensive end Max Granville. He played 10 snaps late in the game but did not record any counting stats. If junior and starting defensive end Dani Dennis-Sutton, who was hurt Saturday, misses next week, Granville could find himself in the defensive end rotation moving forward.
Aside from Granville, the trio of freshmen who have already burned their redshirt all played. Safety Dejuan Lane logged 11 defensive snaps and recorded a pass breakup. Tight end Luke Reynolds saw 10 snaps but saw no counting stats. And, offensive lineman Cooper Cousins has six snaps on offense and more on special teams.

First, a reminder: Any member of the roster can play in up to four regular season games and still preserve a year of eligibility. Once you pay in a fifth, you can no longer redshirt. And, most importantly, postseason games do not count against the total. It is a regular season counter only.
