Penn State is at the midway point of the 2024 season. The Nittany Lions are 6-0 and now into their second and final bye week of the year. Head coach James Franklin’s team has had to use a few members of the Class of 2024 in ways it may not have expected when the season started. But, by and large, the program is in fine shape to redshirt many of its first-year players. Where do things stand now? We review the action for the young Lions in the 33-30 win over USC before offering a full season breakdown to date below.

How did the Penn State freshmen play against USC?

There were a number of Nittany Lion freshmen on the travel roster at USC. The Lions brought receiver Tyseer Denmark, safety Dejuan Lane, offensive lineman Cooper Cousins, cornerback Jon Mitchell, quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer, defensive end Max Granville, safety Vaboue Toure, cornerback Antoine Belgrave-Shorter, running back Quinton Martin Jr., linebacker Anthony Speca, defensive end Jaylen Harvey, defensive tackle Xavier Gilliam, offensive tackle Eagan Boyer, and tight end Luke Reynolds. Only four of them saw game action. And, none of them recorded any counting stats.

Martin was in for two plays on offense per Pro Football Focus and also received special teams snaps. He now has played in three games so far this season. It’s looking increasingly likely that he will end up burning his redshirt this fall. As for the three players who already burned their redshirt, PFF has Cousins down for five offensive snaps. And, Lane played special teams and also logged two snaps on defense.

First, a reminder: Any member of the roster can play in up to four regular season games and still preserve a year of eligibility. Once you pay in a fifth, you can no longer redshirt. And, most importantly, postseason games do not count against the total. It is a regular season counter only.
