Penn State has hit the four-game mark of the regular season. That means three Nittany Lions will officially burn their redshirt this weekend when UCLA comes to town for a Noon ET kick at Beaver Stadium. Safety Dejuan Lane, offensive lineman Cooper Cousins, and tight end Luke Reynolds have each played in four games this season. Playing in a fifth, which all are expected to do this weekend, would officially put them over the maximum number of games one can play (which is four) to save a year of eligibility.

“And then just to kind of give you guys some updates, red, yellow, green, nothing has really changed at this point. Luke Reynolds is a go, green. Cooper Cousins is a go, green. And Dejuan [Lane] is a go, green,” head coach James Franklin said Monday.

“The rest of these guys are kind of transitioning from yellow to green, possibly, depending on how the season goes.”

How did the Penn State freshmen play against Illinois?

After a big number of Class of 2024 signees saw the field against Kent State, things were back to normal this week with just Cousins, Reynolds, and Lane seeing action.

Lane took six snaps at safety and saw time on special teams but did not have any counting stats in the win. Cousins played special teams but also had to close out the game for the Nittany Lions after teammates and guards Sal Wormley and JB Nelson were both injured during the contest. The first-year blocker ultimately played 15 snaps on offense. And, Reynolds was in for 17 and caught one pass on one target for eight yards.

First, a reminder: Any member of the roster can play in up to four regular season games and still preserve a year of eligibility. Once you pay in a fifth, you can no longer redshirt. And, most importantly, postseason games do not count against the total. It is a regular season counter only.
