Penn State blasted Indiana on Saturday at Memorial Stadium. Part of the Lions’ path to victory featured numerous freshmen making enormous poays on both sides of the ball. The biggest non-stat sheet contributor was Drew Shelton, who started his first career game at left tackle.

“Yeah, I can’t have it both ways, right?” Penn State coach James Franklin said. “I can’t say I’m not going to talk about injuries and expect you guys to understand how challenging that was. [Drew] Shelton as a true freshman, starting at left tackle in the Big Ten, in this type of game on the road, has not played a whole lot. We’re to trying to redshirt him if we could. Not only did he play, but he played well. JB Nelson, who we’re trying to redshirt as well, played a ton of reps. You also see Sal [Wormely], he’s banged up and bruised and he battled. Hunter [Nourzad], banged up and bruised, and he battled.

“Really, really proud of those guys of what they did, and how did, and sacrifices their making for the team. I’m proud of those guys, and how they played with toughness and getting ready to be able to play, and guys did a good job of helping those guys get ready to play this game.”

Who else played a role? Let’s dive in.

Penn State redshirt report: Indiana

Shelton was not the only first-year Penn State player who made an impact in the win. Drew Allar threw for two touchdowns on a nine of 12 day for 75 yards. Running backs Kaytron Allen and Nicholas Singleton combined for 159 yards and four touchdowns out of the backfield. Each now has eight rushing touchdowns, which ties Noah Cain’s eight in 2019 for the freshmen rushing scores record.

Elsewhere, Defensive back KJ Winston had three tackles, and end Dani Dennis-Sutton had three and also his first career interception, as well. Linebacker Abdul Carter had two stops.

Finally, although they played, receiver Omai Evans, defensive tackle Zane Durant, and corner Cam Miller had no counting statistics. Neither did freshman linebacker Keon Wylie, who played in his second game of the year.
