Penn State picked up a commitment in its Class of 2027 on Saturday from wide receiver Khalil Taylor, but that wasn’t the only major development. Following a visit to State College today, Blue White Illustrated confirmed with Class of 2026 running back Messiah Mickens that he’s no longer planning to visit other schools and will be shutting down his recruitment. Saturday’s visit was his first opportunity to spend the day with new running backs coach Stan Drayton.

“I committed to that school for a reason, and I never wanted to be that kid who committed to three different schools,” Mickens said. “I committed to that school for the tradition and me being a kid in this state, it does mean a lot to me to play for my hometown school. Plus, they’ve been making it known that they want me there.

“Honestly, the relationship with Coach Drayton is still building, but I couldn’t ask for a better start with him. He’s been taking time three days a week just to sit down and watch film on me for hours. He’ll be in there until 10 o’clock some nights focusing on just me. He’s been doing everything he can to get to know me and show me why this is still the best place for me.”

Earlier this week, Mickens informed On3’s Chad Simmons that he was seriously considering Missouri, North Carolina, Notre Dame and South Carolina. The Fighting Irish were expected to be Penn State’s main competitor, as Mickens planned to take an official visit to South Bend in June. Of course, his relationship with former Nittany Lion running back coach Ja’Juan Seider was a major reason why.

Mickens was named Pennsylvania’s Gatorade Player of the Year in 2024. The Harrisburg High prospect finished the 2024 season with 1,214 yards rushing and another 235 yards receiving, scoring 23 touchdowns. His defensive stats were also impressive, finishing with 81 tackles and an eye-catching 39 tackles for loss. Mickens also had 21 quarterback hurries, 16.5 sacks and two forced fumbles.

The 5-foot-10, 210-pound back committed to the Nittany Lions before his sophomore season in Aug. 2023. At the time, he played at Trinity High School for former Nittany Lion defensive tackle Jordan Hill. Hill is now a member of Penn State’s football staff.

On3 currently has Mickens ranked No. 134 nationally and No. 10 overall at the running back position. He’s the fourth-ranked player in Pennsylvania.
