Penn State running back David Kency Jr., enters NCAA transfer portal
Penn State running back David Kency Jr. has entered the NCAA transfer portal. The walk-on from Harvey, La., joined the Lions in 2023. He spent that year redshirting and providing scout team looks. Earlier this year, he told Blue-White Illustrated about his first year on campus and how he was aiming to improve in 2024.
“When I first got here, I thought I was going to be like third string,” Kency said. “Then when I got here I saw how talented the other guys are and saw how much harder I needed to work to improve my game. I have to get better at blocking, I have to get better at changing direction and I have to get better at catching.”
Kency undoubtedly hoped to work his way up the depth chart during spring practice. But, while Trey Potts vacated the third running back role, redshirt freshman Cam Wallace looks poised to claim it behind starters Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen. Thus, Kency will look for a new place to play this fall. He had a very good high school career, headlined by 1,640 rushing yards and 25 touchdowns. A two-time team captain, he was also a two-time all-district selection in football and an all-state pick in track and field.
Other Lions who hit the portal this spring include receivers KeAndre Lambert-Smith, Malick Meiga, and Malik McClain, defensive tackle Davon Townley Jr., and safety King Mack.

Our well-established network of reporters and contacts across college athletics keeps you up to speed in several ways. We have articles written about players as they enter and exit the transfer portal or find their new destination, a dedicated transfer portal Twitter account, and the On3 Transfer Portal wire.
The transfer portal wire provides a real-time feed of player activity, including basic player profile information, transfer portal ranking, and original On3 Consensus recruiting ranking, as well as NIL valuation (name, image, and likeness).
While the transfer portal officially opens for business on April 16 for undergraduate players, grad transfers can enter it at any time. This specific transfer portal window runs through April 30, 2024. It is important to note that a player does not need to make his decision by the deadline. Undergrads do, however, have to declare their intent to enter the portal by then. When they pick their next school or decide to return to their current one after that is up to them.
