Penn State football climbed in the On3 Industry Football Team Recruiting Rankings with a big Blue-White Weekend. Tuesday afternoon, though, the Nittany Lions got over the hump.

Welcoming the commitment of four-star offensive lineman, Donovan Harbour, Penn State is now 10th nationally. The Nittany Lions’ Class of 2024 now features 10 total commitments, improving its overall team score from 91.137 to 91.216.

In the process, Penn State jumped No. 11 LSU and displaced No. 10 Oregon. The Tigers dipped to 12th (91.169 to 90.965) while Oregon dropped to No. 11 (91.609 to 91.193).

Penn State has been on a recruiting roll in recent weeks. With the commitment of three-star tight end Luke Reynolds, Penn State has jumped from No. 19 in the final week in March to its current place in the top 10. Florida cornerback Jon Mitchell, ranked No. 61 nationally, joined the class on April 1. Four-star athlete Quinton Martin, ranked No. 44 nationally, verballed on April 7. And, both Antoine Belgrave-Shorter and Caleb Brewer committed in the past eight days.

Importantly, Harbour changes the complexion of Penn State’s class and how it fits into the On3 Industry Ranking. The Nittany Lions’ fourth four-star commitment, Harbour is the third-highest ranked pledge in the class. With a rating of 91.61 across the industry, he’s behind only Martin (95.29) and Mitchell (91.83).

Explaining the On3 Industry Ranking Football Team Recruiting Rankings

To contextualize the On3 Industry Ranking Football Team Recruiting Rankings, the algorithm includes weighted input from all of the major services in the recruiting industry. Those services include On3, 247Sports, Rivals, and ESPN.

The result is then pulled from a baseline number of commitments to use in producing its ranking score. The goal is to present a comprehensive picture of where teams stand relative to their peers each cycle, thereby setting a standard number from which to judge classes.

The number to consider as of Tuesday afternoon, as programs continue to add commitments for the Class of 2024, has increased to six.

Penn State football’s place in the Big Ten

The latest commitment to the Nittany Lions moved the program up in the overall standings. However, Penn State’s place in the Big Ten pecking order hasn’t changed.

The Nittany Lions remain firmly behind No. 1 Ohio State, who trails only Georgia nationally, as well as No. 2 Michigan. The gap has widened though with the rest of the league. Wisconsin (88.487) represents a drop-off of nearly three full points in the overall recruiting score. Iowa, Michigan State, Purdue, Nebraska, Minnesota, and Rutgers round out the top 10 in the conference.

Maryland, UCLA, Southern Cal, Northwestern, and Illinois finish the Big Ten standings. Indiana remains without a verbal commitment at this point in the process.
