Penn State landed its second wide receiver in the transfer portal when former four-star prospect Malik McClain committed to the Nittany Lions on Wednesday. To get you more information on the former Florida State Seminole, insider Sean Fitz sits down with film analyst Thomas Frank Carr to discuss McClain’s fit at Penn State.

Before getting into McClain’s evaluation as a player, Fitz wants to start with the Penn State side of things. He goes into detail about how quickly this recruitment came together and how it represents a dramatic shift for the program to get this win. He points to things beyond the football department and how this change helps. Next, T-Frank asks Fitz to clarify how long this process went and give fans a recruitment timeline for McClain.

What is Penn State getting in McClain?

Next, they dive into what McClain brings to the table as a football player. Fitz starts by explaining the situation at Florida State and how little film there is of McClain playing this past season, but he outlines his skills. T-Frank follows up with an unlikely comparison to another Penn State transfer with a similar scouting profile a few years ago.

Once they break down his skills, they place him into the room and see where he fits within the talent already accumulated at Penn State. With both Dante Cephas and McClain on board, things become clear about how the room fits together. But is McClain a clear-cut starter with the team? First, Fitz gives a rough outline of the depth chart he thinks will manifest next season if things go according to plan. T-Frank follows up by discussing the reps and how players can share certain positions or roles within the offense.

Penn State landed both Cephas and McClain despite not having an active wide receiver coach on the team. Assistant coach Taylor Stubblefied announced his firing Sunday night, hours before Cephas committed to the program and while McClain was on campus. With the duo on board for 2023, the next position coach will have a depth of talent and experience to choose from.
