Penn State signee picked to make an instant impact; Lions land in four-star's top five: Newsstand
Penn State news, notes, and updates for Dec. 22 include a four-star’s top five, a Lions signee who could make an instant impact, and more.
It’s time to dive into Friday’s top tweets and headlines about the Nittany Lions and college athletics.
Penn State tweets of the day
We start with the Class of 2023. On3 Director of Scouting and Rankings Charles Power and scouting and rankings assistant Cody Bellaire picked 12 Class of 2024 signees who could make an instant impact next fall. One of them is Penn State four-star corner signee Jon Mitchell.
“Jon Mitchell‘s blend of natural athleticism and advanced technique makes him a top 100 prospect for On3,” Bellaire writes. Mitchell, who is from Jacksonville, Fla., stands 5-foot-11, 180 pounds and is ranked as the No. 83 overall senior by On3.
“The ability to mirror and stay in phase is far ahead of the curve for a high school prospect and points to the potential of an early impact at Penn State. Given that Penn State has one of the nation’s best defenses, it seems unlikely that a freshman could walk in and potentially compete for a starting job next year. However, with starting corner Johnny Dixon choosing not to use his extra year of eligibility and accepting an invite to the Reese’s Senior Bowl along with Daequan Hardy exhausting his eligibility, there is an avenue for Mitchell to potentially compete for a starting job as soon as he arrives on campus.”

Quote of the day
“I wanted to get it narrowed down before the first of the year. Going into a couple of junior days and getting stuff lined up for official visits, I wanted to make sure it was cut and clear going into those. This is where I’m sitting. These are my final five as I narrow it down to a decision.”
