Penn State news, notes, and updates for April 17 include a recap of the opening day of the spring transfer portal window, a list of teams targeting a former Nittany Lion who is moving on, and more.
It’s time to dive into Wednesday’s top tweets and headlines about the Nittany Lions and college athletics.
Penn State tweets of the day
The 15-day spring transfer portal window opened on Tuesday. It was a mostly uneventful first day for Penn State. The Lions saw only receiver Malick Meiga move on. And, no new offers were reported.
“After a great four years, it’s time for a new chapter,” Meiga wrote on Twitter. “I want to express my deepest gratitude to the amazing fans, teammates, and coaching staff at Penn State University. Your support, camaraderie, and guidance have meant the world to me. I am officially in the transfer portal.”
It might be a slow burn, but the pace will pick up, both in terms of players going in and interest being expressed to players from other schools, in the days ahead.
This particular window closes on April 30. But, players only have to be in the portal by then and can take longer to make their final choice.

In other news, former Nittany Lion receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith has a list of early suitors after him for his final season of eligibility. On3’s Pete Nakos reports that Texas A&M, Auburn, Colorado, Georgia, and West Virginia have all contacted the Norfolk, Va., native since he hit the portal back on Monday. The Mountaineers host Penn State to start the 2024 season, of course, and their depth chart indicates the possibility for playing time right away. Colorado’s looks favorable, as well, though head coach Deion Sanders will surely be very active in the portal this spring.
Adds Nakos:
“Miami has also been in contact, however, the Hurricanes do not expect to be in the mix. West Virginia feels confident they can make a run to land Lambert-Smith. NIL is expected to be a factor.”

Quote of the day
“I would say I definitely got more confident from last season, not just spring ball, but just going into the season too. The whole process I say my confidence just got higher. The guys really know what they are doing, and they just make the job way easier. For me, just confidence is really my biggest thing right now. I feel like it’s way higher than last season.”
