Penn State star heavyweight Greg Kerkvliet named Big Ten wrestler of the week
Another Penn State wrestler is receiving recognition from the Big Ten. Nittany Lions’ heavyweight Greg Kerkvliet is the conference’s co-wrestler of the week. He secured a victory by fall in just 56 seconds over Michigan State’s Max Vanadia last Friday night at Rec Hall. The senior scored three takedowns before securing the pin. It kicked off a bonus point barrage for head coach Cael Sanderson’s team. It earned its fourth shutout of the year by beating the Spartans 55-0.
“We are challenged every week,” Kerkvliet said this week, per PennLive. “We’re wrestling some of the best guys in the world in practice every day, so we’re always competing and getting good work in.”
Kerkvliet, who is now 10-0 this season, is the sixth Nittany Lion to receive a weekly Big Ten honor this season. He split this week’s award with Maryland 184-pound junior Caleb Smith. He picked up a pair of wins last weekend.

The Nittany Lions are headed to Nebraska
Kerkvliet and his Penn State teammates head to Nebraska today for a top-10 matchup with Nebraska on Friday night in Lincoln. The match starts at 9 p.m. ET. Big Ten Network will televise it. Multiple top-five bouts are expected. One of them will not come at heavyweight. But, the Nittany Lion is still likely to face a ranked foe in Cornhuskers’ sophomore Harley Andrews. He is No. 24 in InterMat’s latest rankings. Nebraska as a team is No. 6. Penn State is No. 1, of course. A sell-out crowd is expected.

“We’ll be ready to go on Friday night,” Nebraska coach Mark Manning told FLO Wrestling. “The pure energy of this match and the excitement, you don’t have to talk to the team too much about who we’re wrestling or how great they are,” Manning said. “We all know they’re really good – they’ve won 11 of the last 13 national championships and they haven’t lost a dual meet in 1,809 days or some crazy stat. I think this is a good opportunity, and we’re going to have to bring our A-game because this team is really good, they have a lot of studs, and they’re well-coached.
“I have a lot of respect for Cael Sanderson, and Casey (Cunningham), and Cody (Sanderson). They do a super job there and do a great job of developing their guys, not only physically but mentally. It’s fun. It’s why you come to Nebraska and wrestle and work out hard in the offseason is for matches like this to step up and show what you’re all about for seven minutes.”
