Penn State star Tyler Warren wins Big Ten tight end of the year honor
Penn State football star senior Tyler Warren is the Big Ten Kwalick-Clark Tight End of the Year. The conference announced the honor Tuesday during its live postseason awards show on the Big Ten Network. It is the first major honor for the Virginia native after his dazzling and versatile regular season.
“He’s a beast and I think the point is that everybody goes into it saying you got to stop Tyler Warren,” Lions coach James Franklin said Saturday. “Everybody’s defensive game plan is we can’t allow 44 to impact the game, just like for us, it was Tai Felton. We went into this saying Tai Felton was going to make some plays, he’s a really good player, but we got to limit his impact. Everybody said that every single week with Tyler Warren, no one’s done it. They ought to bring the Mackey Award tonight, put it on a private jet, fly it to Tyler Warren, give it to him on Sunday, and then he should get an invitation to New York.
“He’s done it week in and week out. He’s a big-time player, and he’s doing it when all eyes are on him, and he’s the focus of the game plan. So he’s a special guy. His humility is impressive. You guys ask him questions, every question he gets, it’s an opportunity for him to turn the attention to his teammates. He’s a stud.”
Warren is the first Penn State tight end to win the honor since Pat Freiermuth did in 2020. He is the only other Nittany Lion to claim the award, which has been handed out annually since 2011.

Recapping Penn State star Tyler Warren’s regular season
Franklin is right: The Penn State offense has run through Warren. Everyone has known that for months. No one has been able to totally shut down No. 44 though. He has already set the Big Ten tight end season receptions record with 81. He is the Nittany Lions’ tight end records for career receiving yards (1,584), career 100-yard receiving games (5), season receptions (81), season receiving yards (978), and career touchdowns (17). Besides his team-leading 81-978-6 receiving line, he also has rushed 21 times for 189 yards and four scores in addition to completing 3 of 5 passes for 35 yards and a touchdown.
Simply put, there’s almost nothing Warren has not done this season besides try an extra point. He joked last weekend that it’s one thing he knows he could not do well. But, based on his year to date, it would probably still be worth trying.
The 2024 Penn State season continues Saturday when the Lions face Oregon in the Big Ten title game. Kickoff is set for 8:17 p.m. ET on CBS.
