Penn State stars Tyler Warren and Abdul Carter make The Athletic's All-American team

All-American team season kicked off on Wednesday when The Athletic released its list of the nation’s top players at each position. Two Penn State players are on it. And, it’s the pair you would expect to make the cut. Tight end Tyler Warren and linebacker Abdul Carter are both first-team selections. No Nittany Lions made the second team.
Warren is not a Heisman Trophy finalist. But, he will make many teams like this one and also is up for the Mackey and Paul Hornung Award after his record-setting first 13 games in 2024. The senior from Virginia is one of the nation’s most impactful players. He is the Big Ten record holder for receptions and receiving yards for a tight end in a single season and has broken numerous Penn State records with his 88 catches for 1,062 yards and six touchdowns. He’s also thrown for a score and run for four more.
“Warren is the versatile go-to weapon in an offense that has jumped from 75th to sixth in yards per play despite having a lack of go-to playmakers at wideout,” The Athletic writes. “Warren is one of two 1,000-yard receivers in the Big Ten, catching 88 passes for 1,062 yards and six touchdowns — including a staggering 17 catches for 224 yards and a TD in a comeback win at USC. He’s also completed three passes for 35 yards and a TD and rushed 23 times for 191 yards and four TDs, lining up as a traditional tight end, out wide, at quarterback and in the backfield.”
Warren has continued to see his draft stock rise as his play on the field has. He could end up as a first-round pick. If not, he will make some team happy very early on day two.

Carter, meanwhile, could end up as a top five selection and seems like a shoo-in to go in the top 10. The Penn State junior has been dominant during his first season at defensive end. He is the Big Ten defensive player of the year and is up for a variety of national awards.
“The junior moved from outside linebacker to defensive end and thrived as the season progressed,” The Athletic writes. “Despite some early inconsistency, he developed into one of the most disruptive players in the country, showcasing his speed and athleticism in racking up 60 tackles, 19.5 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, three pass breakups and two forced fumbles.”
