Penn State news and notes for March 13 include a recap of the first day of spring practice, a transfer picking his destination, and more.

It’s time to dive into Wednesday’s top tweets and headlines about the Nittany Lions and college athletics.

Penn State tweets of the day

We start with Jordan van den Berg. After three seasons in State College, the defensive tackle entered the transfer portal in February We now know where he will play next: Georgia Tech. He announced the news on Tuesday and will be eligible to play for the Yellow Jackets in 2024.

Moving on, we have complete recap of a busy Tuesday in Lions land. For the 11th consecutive year, head coach James Franklin spoke with reporters inside of the Beaver Stadium media room before welcoming them to a portion of the team’s first spring practice of the year. The biggest takeaway is that potential starting left tackle Drew Shelton underwent offseason surgery that will cause him to miss some or all of spring ball. But, the program and player both felt that getting the surgery done right after the 2023 season was the right move.

In other news, Franklin said Mehki Flowers (moving from safety to receiver) and Abdul Carter (from linebacker to defensive end) were both changes that the players brought to the coaching staff for their approval. Obviously, they agreed that both switches were the best move for all parties.

“He was really kinda on the bubble of struggling to keep his weight in the linebacker (range), him and Kobe (King),” Franklin said.

“They’ve been right around 250, above or below, for a while. I think (Carter’s) body was naturally telling him he could make the move if needed to or he wanted to and there’s an opportunity there.”

Quote of the day

I think there does need to be a sense of urgency, but the reality is, we got three new coordinators so for me to compare this first day to the last couple, that doesn’t make sense. But, there does need to be a sense of urgency. One of the things that jumps out right away is just our depth. We’re bigger, stronger, and have more competition across more positions than I think we’ve had in the past.

“That also is going to be exciting for practice. I think we’re going to be able to practice, in terms of reps, in a different way. And, we’re hopeful to have more of a traditional spring game. You see a lot of people go away from spring games and are having more of a practice or skills-type activity in front of the fans. We’re hopeful to have more of a traditional spring game. I’m not too concerned about hiding much. People have all the tape. It’s not like there’s a whole lot of secrets out there.”
