Penn State fans know well how much former strength coach Dwight Galt III impacted the program in recent years.
Former players like tight end Mike Gesicki, running back Saquon Barkely and many others showed the kind of impact he had at the NFL Combine in recent years. Barkley’s workout in particular is still recognized as one of the best at his position. Linebacker Micah Parsons and defensive end Odafe “Jayson” Oweh would’ve also shined had they got the chance last year.
Galt officially retired after the 2021 season after nearly 40 years in the business. For Penn State head coach James Franklin, there was only one man who deserved to follow in his footsteps: Chuck Losey.
Losey has been with Franklin since his tenure at Vanderbilt. He’s been as loyal as they come, waiting for an opportunity like this to take over a major Division I football program.
A graduate of Vanderbilt University, Losey was a former player himself, starting 31 games at defensive end from 1998 to 2002. He won defensive line MVP honors for the Commodores his senior year.

Now, he has a new challenge in overseeing a Penn State strength and conditioning program that’s ranked among the best in the nation under his predecessor.

As for who stood out this season, Losey noted a few young players.
“Zuriah Fisher is a guy who jumps out to me. We’re going to be dependent [on him] this upcoming season. He’s had outstanding growth. That’s physically, that’s mentally, that’s emotionally. Jaylen Reed is another young safety. I strategically partnered him up with Ji’Ayir Brown throughout the offseason workout and I think that’s paid dividends for his growth and development. I’m excited about Jaylen Reed.
“Harrison Wallace is another young receiver. He’s consistent and methodical about his approach coming in every day. He’s done everything right, so I’m excited about him.”
