Penn State has had numerous players recognized by various media outlets who posted preseason All-American and/or all-conference teams this summer. Now, another Nittany Lion has been honored. Junior offensive tackle Olu Fashanu is one of five East division players and 10 overall from the league on the Big Ten football preseason honors list. Released annually, it highlights a panel’s vote of who the top five players are in each division, regardless of position.

Fashanu is the first NIttany Lion to make the cut since receiver Jahan Dotson did ahead of the 2021 season. The honor was deserved before the year began and justified in hindsight as Dotson went on to earn first-team postseason All-Big Ten honors and also a spot on the Associated Press’ All-American third team before being drafted in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Washington Commanders. Fashanu is expected to follow a similar trajectory after returning to Penn State for the 2023 season. He could have been a top 10 pick in this year’s pro selection process. But, he instead decided to return for what should be a final year in blue and white.

“It was presented as a win-win situation,” Fashanu told BWI. “Whatever I did, I’d have the full support of the coaching staff, whether I left or I came back. It felt good to hear that whatever I would do, whatever decision I made, I would have the full support of the coaching staff. They gave me the green light to make whatever choice I wanted because they’re both positives, it’s a win-win.”

Penn State, Fashau set for Big Ten Media Days

Fashanu is joined on the Big Ten preseason honors list by Michigan quarterback J.J McCarthy, Wolverines running back Blake Corum, Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, and Ohio State receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., from the East Division. The conference announced it a day before its two-day media days event begins in Indianapolis, Ind. Penn State and seven other schools will go on day one.

Head coach James Franklin will lead the Lions’ contingent at Lucas Oil Stadium on Wednesday. He will start with a Noon ET speech from the podium. Big Ten Network will televise it. Later in the day, he, Fashanu, safety Keaton Ellis, and defensive end Adisa Isaac will field questions from the reporters on hand. The group will also participate in interviews and photo/video shoots with members of the national media and the Big Ten’s television partners. Then, they will head back to State College to make final preparations for preseason camp.

Blue-White Illustrated will have live coverage both days from Indianapolis.
