Penn State rolled with two starting tight ends throughout the 2023 season. Senior captain Theo Johnson announced last week that he would be testing the waters of the NFL after the Peach Bowl, while counterpart Tyler Warren’s status remained unclear.

On Friday evening, Warren announced that he will be returning for one more year in Happy Valley.

“Having the opportunity to compete against the best, be trained by the best and receive a world-class education is something l’m grateful for every day,” he wrote on a post on his Instagram page.

“As I reflect on the past four years, I’m thankful for the memories and lessons learned alongside my teammates and coaches. I’m excited to have the opportunity to play in the Peach Bowl in just a few short days with a team I love and respect. We’ve done some great things as a family, but I do believe the best is yet to come. After much thought and consideration, I’ve decided to return to Penn State for the 2024 season.”

Warren led Penn State in receiving touchdowns in 2023

Warren played in all 12 games for the Nittany Lions this season. He finished the year with 29 catches for 295 yards and seven touchdowns, which was a team-high. Warren has caught 44 passes for 479 yards and 11 touchdowns in his Penn State career. One out of four receptions in his career has gone for a touchdown, including two scores against Iowa in the White Out back in September.

He’s also a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection with a major in Advertising and Public Relations.

He talked to reporters last week and while the expectation was to return in 2024, he left the door open to explore his options. Warren did acknowledge that he has plenty to work on before the next level.

“I think I definitely improved over the offseason and into this season, and there’s still things I can get better at as a tight end, of course. But I thought I was the best teammate that could be on the field and that’s something I focus on a lot. So, I was proud of that, but I think there’s still stuff I could improve on.”
