Penn State football opened up training camp for the 2022 season on Monday evening, and Blue White Illustrated was on hand to get you inside access. YouTube host Thomas Frank Carr takes you through his view of camp in the roughly ten minutes that the media observed practice.

Penn State freshman first through the line (with players missing)

Special teams dominated the period, so T-Frank highlights new faces taking part in camp for the first time. He introduces fans to several key players, including two that will presumably battle for the backup job behind Jonathan Sutherland in freshman KJ Winston and Lackawanna transfer Tyrece Mills. Freshman receiver Tyler Johnson, corner Cam Miller, and safety Mehki Flowers also make an appearance.

However, star of the evening is running back Nick Singleton. With presumed starter Keyvone Lee and fellow freshman Kaytron Allen missing camp for class, Singleton took lead reps through drills, and specials teams work. Singleton is one of Penn State’s most anticipated freshmen thanks to his skills and Penn State’s lack of explosive talent at the running back position.

Finally, T-Frank looks at the other veterans who return to key roles in the fall.

Penn State must healthy during camp

This one is as obvious as the sky is blue. But, it’s a mandatory addition to our list because nothing can derail a season quite like an injury 30 days before it kicks off.

There is, of course, little that Penn State can control in this regard. Players being careful and respecting the thud portion of practice is one way. But by and large, this often comes down to a good bit of luck. And, this category also includes making sure defenders like PJ Mustipher and Adisa Isaac are brought along at a speed that matches their recovery timelines.

Get Ken Talley up to speed

James Franklin confirmed at Big Ten Media Days that Class of 2022 signee Ken Talley would be with the team for camp. The final enrollee from the recent signing class is the four-star edge from Philadelphia. While he wasn’t necessarily expected to contribute right away, his arrival setback all but ensures that, if he does, it won’t be until later in the year. But, Penn State must still quickly get him up to speed in Manny Diaz’s defense while maximizing his first camp in State College.
