Penn State made its latest move in the transfer portal on Wednesday night when it landed former Minnesota running back Trey Potts. He spent less than a month in the portal after entering it back on March 13.

Potts brings plenty of experience to State College. He rushed for 1,195 yards and 11 touchdowns over four seasons with the Golden Gophers. The Williamsport, Pa., saw his 2021 season cut short due to an unspecific medical issue. He played in 12 games last year, though, and racked up 101 carries for 471 yards and three scores.

It will be interesting to see if the Lions try Potts out in the return game. As the expected third running back, he could be used in that capacity just as Devyn Ford was before him. However, Potts only has seven career returns (six punt, one kickoff), all of which came during the 2021 season. So, time will tell there.

Potts has multiple seasons of eligibility remaining. He will arrive on campus later this year in time for preseason camp. Penn State was hopeful to develop depth at running back during spring practice. Instead, it hit the portal to do so in the spring instead.

The Lions are now even at the running back position in terms of the portal. They lost Keyvone Lee to it but picked up Potts. Lee, for what it’s worth, still has not picked his next school.

Potts is Penn State’s second transfer portal addition who will join the team this summer. The other is former Kent State receiver Dante Cephas.

Here’s the transfer portal timeline for Penn State so far this offseason.
