Recapping win over Auburn

Host Thomas Frank Carr discusses Penn State’s 41-12 victory over Auburn with Blue White Illustrated insiders Sean Fitz and Nate Bauer live on Monday evening. They’ll recap the most important players and storylines emerging from Penn State’s second Power Five victory of the year. They’ll also take your questions live on the air! Join the show at 8 pm to talk with BWI’s experts about the most recent game.

Both panelists agreed that fans and media alike would learn more about head coach James Franklin’s squad this past weekend, so T-Frank starts the show with that question. What did they learn about this team?

From there, they’ll discuss Penn State’s newest superstar in freshman tailback Nicholas Singleton. It seems he’s already defining the offense for the Nittany Lions, but can he change the program’s fate too? From there, they’ll discuss the offensive line and the running game as a whole.

Next, they’ll discuss quarterback Sean Clifford’s performance against Auburn. Then, the panel will discuss what stood out about the sixth-year senior’s work and how the Nittany Lions can replicate that in Big Ten games.

Penn State offense dominates ground game in new-look style: Film Study

Penn State started slow but steadily built a lead through the first half against Auburn before busting the game wide open in Saturday’s 41-12 win. In today’s film review, we’ll focus on the offensive line and its continued evolution, individual standout players, and what the Tigers did on defense that gave Penn State an advantage.

Penn State’s run game evolution

Over the first two weeks of the season, we’ve discussed Penn State’s tweaks, adding in more man-based concepts. Those conversations were centered around the skills of freshman running back Nicholas Singleton and his comfort in that environment. But against Auburn, we see that this change goes beyond that. Based on their formations and fronts, Auburn expected Penn State to stick to the script from the first two week; play off the inside zone system and sprinkle in some tendency-breakers. The Tigers appeared ready to deploy the same game plan of a three-down front with a condensed formation to gum up Penn State’s zone blocking. They even threw in some defensive line slants into the zone side of the formation.

Suddenly, Penn State zagged.
