Penn State vs. Illinois preview

It’s rained seven out of the last eight days in State College leading into the game this evening. What sort of mood will the crowd be in tonight? More importantly, how does the weather actually affect play? We’ll discuss the potential impact the weather will have on the game tonight.

Next, we’ll discuss the game’s importance for the Penn State Football team and how the two teams match up on the field. Tengwall will explain where the teams will battle and where each team might have an advantage.

Drew Allar and the passing game

Early this week, Penn State head coach James Franklin discussed the game’s biggest matchup during his introductory Monday press conference.

“I think their secondary is really going to be a challenge for us. I think our wide receivers have taken a really nice step and made some really good strides since last season, but we will be challenged. We will be challenged in the secondary this week.”

Is that the key matchup for this week? We’ll discuss that and then break down where the Penn State offense can make plays and what sort of style they’ll need to implement to score points and cover a three-score spread.

Defense banged up and making adjustments

The Penn State defense is already down its best player in safety, KJ Winston. Now, there’s a chance that they will also be without linebacker Dom DeLuca. In that void, the team must find a path forward that will include at least one freshman in Dejuan Lane.

If they need him, the team is prepared to call upon freshman Anthony Speca, who led the team in tackles last week.

What’s it like playing with freshmen on the field? What is it like being a freshman thrust into the starting lineup? Tengwall weighs in on the situation the defense will find themselves in tonight.

Finally, we’ll give our score predictions and make some bold predictions for tonight’s game.
