Penn State head coach James Franklin previews the Spartans
As he does each week, Penn State head coach James Franklin previewed the upcoming opponent for the media. He started with the Michigan State offense.
“They’re a spread team; west coast based; 11 personnel; wide variety of runs that center around zone schemes. They’re an 11-person team the majority of the time. They will mix in a little bit of 12 personnel,” Franklin said.

Michigan prepared to offer No. 1 recruit $10.5M over 4 years
We have been pretty impressed Maliq Carr, a big tight end, 6’6″, 260 pounds. Really has the ability to make plays in the passing game. Is a challenge there, is a problem there. Running back Nate Carter and then wide receiver No. 83, Montorie Foster, all guys that jump out to us on tape.”
Carr averages 10.8 yards per reception for the Spartans this season. The 6-5 tight end has 301 yards and three touchdowns on the season.
Michigan State defense
Franklin continued, discussing the Michigan State defense for the Penn State media and fans.
“They are a four-down front, some variation of 4-3 or 4-2 when they go nickel. [We’ve] been impressed by Cal Haladay, [a] local kid playing middle linebacker for them. Very productive. Aaron Brule, the linebacker, and then their nickel/safety 43, Malik Spencer, and last, their safety, No. 1, Jaden Mangham. So guys that we got a bunch of respect for,” Franklin said.
Kickoff is at 7:30. Afterwards, join the BWI Live Postgame Show for reaction and analysis of the game. We’ll discuss the most important players, moments, and schemes during the matchup.
