Penn State football’s first month of the season is all but set, with multiple game times announced, and every game theme revealed for the 2023 home slate. So to celebrate the start of the season, we’re previewing Penn State’s marquee non-conference game against West Virginia. Earlier this week, we looked at the Mountaineers offense and how it operates. Today we’re looking at the West Virginia defense. This is a schematic overview, not a breakdown of positional strengths and weaknesses. We’re establishing the “why” behind the offense, not the “who.” Unlike the offense, the West Virginia defense has some unique Big-12 wrinkles uncommon in Penn State’s traditional Big Ten opponents.
