Time for our weekly Penn State recruiting update presented by our friend Andy Luedecke at MyPerfectFranchise. Andy is a huge college sports fan and franchise veteran, having owned multiple franchises and businesses. Using his expertise, he helps others find their American Dream through a very thorough consultation and evaluation process.

There is no bigger topic right now in college football than the transfer portal. Penn State has seen mixed results so far, despite having excellent player retention this offseason. Today, the BWI Daily Recruiting show focuses on what’s been happening in the transfer portal and then previews the upcoming junior day for Penn State football. Finally, recruiting insiders Ryan Snyder and Sean Fitz will spotlight one player to discuss on today’s show.

“All things being equal” prospects

To start the show, Fitz discusses the status of Penn State’s announced portal commitments with cornerback Storm Duck, kicker Alex Felkins and punter Riley Thompson. He explains where these players are in the process. Next, he checks in on Devin Carter and gives a brief update on his situation. Finally, he and Snyder discuss the NCAA calendar and why players won’t be visiting this week.

Once he’s done setting the scene, he and Snyder discuss the misses that Penn State has experienced, especially at wide receiver. With so much historical success in the portal and a potentially potent offense next season, why can’t the program secure its targets? Next, Snyder and Fitz try to shine a light into the murky waters of NIL and the transfer portal to explain how Penn State conducts itself from a value and ethics standard.

Lastly, they update fans on the new names that the team is interested in pursuing.

Penn State junior day preview

Once the transfer portal discussion is complete, the duo then shifts to recruiting. Penn State’s first junior day starts this weekend, and they dig into the list of names that will attend this coming weekend. While it isn’t a complete list just yet, they highlight several high-level or important prospects.

On that list is four-star defensive end Jaylen Harvey from Quince Orchard in Maryland. He’s the first subject of this offseason’s player spotlight. Fitz and Snyder take a deeper dive into Harvey’s recruitment, where he stands on Penn State’s big board, and how likely he is to join the program.

Once they’ve profiled Harvey, they key in on several other players that they find interesting, including offensive lineman Blake Frazier, receiver Mekhai White, and running back Duke Watson. Fitz is particularly interested in Watson’s recruitment, not because of his talent, but because of his position. He sheds light on why the team might not take a four-star running back at this point.
