Penn State news, notes, and updates for May 23 include new transfer additions plus hype for Ji’Ayir Brown and more.

It’s time to dive into Tuesday’s top tweets and headlines about the Nittany Lions and college athletics.

Penn State tweets of the day

We start with a roster update. Penn State officially welcomed five new transfers on Monday. The scholarship group includes former Kent State receiver Dante Cephas, former Old Dominion defensive tackle Alonzo Ford, one-time Mississippi State cornerback Audavion Collins, and former Minnesota running back and Williamsport native Trey Potts.

The lone walk-on is former Duke offensive lineman Addison Penn.

The quintet started classes last Monday. They will be involved with summer workouts once those begin and ready for preseason camp in August.

In other news, The 33rd Team picked a handful of NFL rookies who are in the best position to thrive in 2023 based on where they were drafted. Former Penn State safety Ji’Ayir Brown made the cut.

“Ji’Ayir Brown is probably feeling a little more special than most third-round picks in his building because the San Francisco 49ers didn’t make a selection in the first two rounds,” Paul Birmeister writes.

“If you want to look into the need a little bit, DeMeco Ryans took Jimmie Ward, the longtime defensive back, with him to Houston. The 49ers need somebody to fill that role to be that third safety. They get that in a playmaking machine in Brown.”

Brown as an All-Big Ten player for the Lions. He now starts his pro career on the west coast.

Quote of the day

“I love it down there,” Smith started. “I really like their scheme, their four-down front, and they’re really aggressive and like to attack and react. Coach (Manny) Diaz has those guys leading in many major categories like TFL and others for the D-line. Coach (Deion) Barnes, being that new DL coach, he’s playing a big role in those guys’ development there. He was a big, big, big key in their improvement and he played at Penn State; he knows the town, knows the city and what it takes to be great in Happy Valley, and Coach (James) Franklin is putting together a playoff-caliber team.”
