Penn State wide receiver Mehki Flowers no longer with football program
Penn State has seen a few players depart the program following its run in the College Football Playoff, the latest of whom is redshirt sophomore Mehki Flowers. A native of Harrisburg, Pa., Flowers was a four-star prospect in the Class of 2022. On3’s Industry Rankings ranked him at No. 187 nationally and firmly among the best in Pennsylvania at No. 5 overall.
Flowers made a name for himself during three seasons at Steel-High before transferring to Central Dauphin East ahead of the 2021 season. Flowers played on both sides of the football throughout his high school career, finishing his senior season with 65 tackles, five tackles for loss, two interceptions and two sacks. On offense, he caught 50 passes for 850 yards, finishing the year with 25 total touchdowns.
It was his play at safety that intrigued Penn State out of high school, and that’s where Flowers played during his first two seasons on campus. He played in just two games during his redshirt season and then played in four games in 2023, primarily on special teams.

Flowers then made a move from safety to wide receiver in the offseason, hoping to bring a spark to a room that was much-maligned following the 2023 season.
“Mehki, we recruited like we recruit a bunch of our guys, we thought he could play both sides of the ball,” Franklin said back in the spring. “Between his dad reaching out and Mehki came in at the end of the season and said that he would like to make the move. So that’s really how that happened. We were obviously open to it, because again, recruiting Mehki, he was an explosive athlete on both sides of the ball with a ton of talent and ball skills.

“So it was really what he wanted to do, but also we were comfortable with it because we recruited him in a way that we felt like he could help play on either side of the ball.”
However, Flowers played just three snaps this season at wide receiver late in the game against West Virginia to open the season. He then popped up on Penn State’s injury report a few weeks later for the game against Kent State, which was a potential opportunity for him to get reps. He was then on the injury report again ahead of the game against Wisconsin. He did contribute on special teams in eight of Penn State’s 16 games this season.
On top of that, Flowers admitted earlier this year that he tore his anterior cruciate ligament ahead of Penn State’s Peach Bowl, whipping out valuable bowl practice as well as developmental time last spring.
