Penn State tweets of the day

The Big Ten has whittled its list of 350 candidates for its annual Outstanding Sportsmanship Award to two representatives from each school. A Penn State wrestler has made the cut. It’s graduate senior Beau Bartlett. The NCAA runner-up at 141 pounds and multi-time All-American is the Nittany Lions’ male nominee. The school’s female nominee is women’s ice hockey player Julie Gough.

“One member of each varsity sports team on every campus was chosen by his or her institution as a Sportsmanship Award honoree, and two Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners were then selected from each institution,” the Big Ten writes in a news release. “All of the Sportsmanship Award winners have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, these honorees must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.”

Bartlett has long showcased respect for opponents and officials on and off the mat. Grough, then, was the Lady Lions’ team captain this season. She is also a five-time AHA All-Academic Team honoree and four-time American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) Scholar All-American. Bartlett is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and a three-time NWCA National All-Academic selection. He sports a record of 74-18 ahead of his final season in State College.

“It was never about committing early for me, but committing at the right time. Now is the right time for me. My relationship with the staff at Penn State is different. I have a super-strong relationship with coach O’Brien and I like coach Franklin a lot. That family environment fits me too. The people there accept me and I see myself thriving in the environment at Penn State.
