Penn State wrestler Brandon Meredith entered the NCAA Transfer Portal after the Lions won their latest team championship in Detroit, Mich., back in March. Now, the Limerick, Pa., native has decided where he will compete next.

Meredith is transferring to South Dakota State, he announced via social media on Tuesday.

“First, I want to thank my family and friends for all of their support,” Meredith wrote on Twitter. “I would not be where I am today without their help these past 4 years. I’m also very appreciative of all the advice and guidance I’ve gotten during this difficult process. This has been one of the hardest decisions to make in my life.

“I want to express my gratitude to my teammates and coaches at Penn State. I wouldn’t trade my experience here for the world. Penn State has truly been home for me, and it has shaped me into the person and wrestler I am today as well.

“With that being said, I am excited to announce I will be finishing my wrestling career at South Dakota State University. I look forward to the future with such a great coaching staff. Time to finish this the right way!”

It’s a logical landing spot. Former Penn State wrestler Brady Berge is now back on the coaching staff there after temporarily leaving it this winter to compete one final time for head coach Cael Sanderson’s program.

Berge’s PSU return, of course, came after a previous medical retirement from the sport. His college eligibility clock is now complete, which means he can fully focus on coaching. And, he’ll do so now with a former teammate as one of his pupils.

Remembering Meredith’s time at Penn State

Meredith was a four-time regional qualifier and a three-time PIAA state qualifier in high school. He left Spring-Ford as its all-time wins leader with 150 and finished fourth in the state tournament as a sophomore.

After arriving at Penn State before the 2018-2019 season, Meredith earned a 3-1 record in open tournaments. As a college sophomore, he was 13-16 as the starter at 125 pounds and qualified for the Big Ten tournament but ultimately did not move on to nationals. The Lion then wrestled just one match during the shortened 2020-2021 season. Finally, last winter, he went 5-6 and appeared in four of the team’s dual meets.

Meredith is the second Nittany Lion to leave the team via the portal since the 2021-2022 season ended. Michael Beard, who wrestled at 197 pounds, has moved on to Lehigh.

Penn State has made one addition from it, however. It landed former Ohio State wrestler Will Betancourt, who is a Pennsylvania native, back in March.

The 2022-2023 Penn State wrestling schedule has not yet been announced.
