Penn State wrestler Roman Bravo-Young sets sights on perhaps last NCAA Tournament
Penn State wrestler Roman Bravo-Young is ready for another NCAA Tournament.
Will it be his last?
The defending NCAA Champion at 133 pounds said back at the Nittany Lions’ media day in November that this season would be his last ride. However, he’s been non-committal to that idea in interviews since, and that was yet again the case during a media session at Little Johns Arena in Detroit, Mich., on Wednesday.
“I don’t know if this is my last NCAA Tournament yet or not, but I’m just going to enjoy it,” Bravo-Young said. “My family is going to be here, and with the fans, it’s going to be awesome.
“That’s why we do it. I consider myself like entertainers. I just want to go out there put on a show, and most importantly, we all need each other to grow this sport. It’s going to be a good weekend.”
Looking ahead to the start of the tournament
Bravo-Young is the top seed in his weight class. He has amassed a 10-0 record against this year’s field and is 17-0 on the season. Penn State is counting on him to score plenty of team points as the Lions aim to avenge their Big Ten tournament loss to Michigan and earn their first NCAA crown since 2019. Bonus points could come in bunches early before a possible finals rematch with Oklahoma State’s Daton Fix. The three-time All-American Nittany Lion beat the Cowboy in sudden victory last year to secure his final NCAA title.
It’s safe to say, too, that RBY has high expectations for himself and head coach Cael Sanderson’s team before the action gets underway on Thursday morning.
“Our expectation is always to win,” Bravo-Young said. “I think that’s everyone who steps on the mat. Everyone wants to win. No one wants to lose. But, it’s just enjoying ourselves, enjoying the moment. This comes and goes, and just take one match at a time, most importantly have fun, and just grateful to be here and the opportunity you know.

“You don’t get many opportunities like this to go out there and wrestle in a big arena of fans and people rooting for you. So, just take it one match at a time, just control what I can control, and enjoy it.”
