Penn State wrestling announces alternate throwback singlets for Rutgers match at the Bryce Jordan Center
Penn State wrestling will wear alternate singlets when it hosts Rutgers at the Bryce Jordan Center. And, they are a towback to the school’s first colors. The Lions will wear black singlets with pink lettering and trim, according to a social media video posted on Monday. It is believed to be the second time the program has worn anything other than their regular singlets in the Cael Sanderson era. Penn State is also asking fans to wear all black to the match, which starts at 7 p.m. ET on Feb. 12. Big Ten Network will televise it.
“What happened is by the time the schedule came out, some of those larger duals just weren’t available,” Penn State coach Cael Sanderson said in November. “Nebraska was THON, the other one had a career fair scheduled for the Jordan Center.
“So we just said, ‘all right, Rutgers always has a great team. They always compete hard. They’re nearby. Their crowd travels. And, when we wrestle there, they always have a sold-out show. So, we figured, hey, let’s just run it and see what we can do.”
It marks the first time the BJC match will be on a week day. But, a sellout crowd is still expected. Penn State is currently 3-0. It does not return to the mat until early January when it travels to Oregon State.

Penn State wrestling rolls into holiday break
Penn State wrestling allows its wrestlers to go home for the holidays if they want to. Most do. They will return to campus later this month to get ready for the 2024 portion of the schedule. It features multiple Big Ten matches and of course the BJC dual. There was some talk that the Lions might wrestle at the home of Penn State men’s and women’s basketball twice this year. But, there is only one such instance.
“It’s tricky,” Sanderson said. “A lot of our kids are going to the open. So, we have to make adjustments for those guys. But, wherever we’re at, we’re going to get some work done. Our kids go home for as long of a holiday as we can give them. That’s not always the best training plan. But, we feel like it’s the best long-term plan for them and their mental well-being and just being excited to compete. It’s all about being ready to go in March.”
