Watch: Cael Sanderson previews Penn State wrestling's 2022-2023 season during Media Day
Penn State wrestling will kickoff the 2022-2023 season this Friday against Lock Haven. With eight national qualifiers returning this season, including four national champions in Roman Bravo-Young, Carter Starocci, Aaron Brooks and Max Dean, the Nittany Lions will once again be considered the team to beat this upcoming season.
This year’s schedule features two matches inside the Bryce Jordan Center, the first of which will take place Jan. 20 against Michigan. Penn State will then host rival Iowa the following Friday, Jan. 27. The non-conference schedule features a trip to West Point, N.Y., Nov. 20 for the Black Knight Invitational. Lehigh, Rider, Clarion and Oregon State are also on the schedule.

Three All-Americans, Starocci, Brooks and heavyweight Greg Kerkvliet, will participate in the NWCA All-Star Classic two days later in Austin, Texas. Starocci will take face Virginia Tech’s Mehki Lewis that weekend, which is a rematch of last year’s NCAA Final. Penn State will also once again participate in the Collegiate Wrestling Duals Dec. 19-20. This year’s tournament will take place in New Orleans.

Sanderson also clarified that Ohio State transfer Alex Betancourt is not on the roster after committing to Penn State via social media earlier this year. That has a big impact on 125, as Robbie Howard is also expected to miss the season.
