PHILADELPHIA – Penn State has clinched its fourth straight NCAA Championship. The Nittany Lions locked up the team title when Shayne Van Ness pinned No. 12 Ethan Stiles Oregon State in a 149-pound consolation semifinals. He’ll go for third later. It is the team’s 12th title in 14 tournaments. All of those have come under the direction of head coach Cael Sanderson, who won his first time in blue and white here at the Wells Fargo Center, as well. All-time, the Lions have 13 as a program.

Nebraska and Oklahoma State are in a battle for second. They kept the Lions from clinching earlier. But, neither the Cornhuskers or Cowboys truly threatened to wrestle the crown away. Now, the team will chase last year’s tournament record final point total of 172.5.

There was no big celebration when the trophy was secured, unlike in other sports. That’s because all of the individuals who helped win it are still chasing individual medals. Penn State has three finalists and 10 All-Americans. It is the second program to accomplish that in college wrestling history. The only other is the 2000-2001 Minnesota team.

The 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championships conclude on Saturday. Third-, fifth-, and seventh place matches are underway Saturday morning. Those start at 11 a.m. ET on ESPNU. Then, at 7 p.m., the finals start on ESPN.
