Penn State news, notes, and updates for July 20 include a future Nittany Lion winning a Junior Men’s Freestyle division title at the Fargo tournament plus a new college football preseason top 25 and more.

It’s time to dive into Thursday’s top tweets and headlines about the Nittany Lions and college athletics.

Penn State tweets of the day

We start with wrestling. Penn State Class of 2024 commit Connor Mirasola took the 195-pound bracket in the junior freestyle division at the prestigious Fargo tournament. He won the 182-pound weight class a year ago. This time, the future Nittany Lion and senior-to-be, who is Flo Wrestling’s No. 18 pound-for-pound wrestler in the country regardless of age, bumped up in weight and similarly dominated the competition. He won his seven matches by a combined score of 71-0. His tournament was capped by a 10-0 win over Junior Robb of Oklahoma at the 5:04 mark of the match.

Numerous other future Penn State wrestlers also competed at the event. Connor Mirasola’s brother, Cole, finished fifth at 195 a year ago. This time, he finished second at 220 pounds. Pa., native Dalton Perry was fifth at 132. Kyison Garcia and Brock Weiss, then, both exited in the consolation round of 16 at 132 and 138 pounds, respectively.

In other news, Penn State football has hit the top 10 of another preseason top 25 poll. Bleacher Report has the Lions further back than most, though. It ranks head coach James Franklin’s team at No. 9 before the first game of the year.

“As excitement builds for the full-time starting debut of former top prospect Drew Allar, the Nittany Lions find themselves in a familiar spot,” David Kenyon writes. “They’re a talented team with a sturdy defense, and 10 wins is an attainable mark. But will they be able to overpower both Michigan and Ohio State to stand atop the Big Ten and contend nationally?”

Quote of the day

“The situation right now in New York, that’s really showing that he’s worth the money, but now because the devaluation has happened, the team is less likely to want to give him the money that he deserves. That’s where we have to figure out what happens. What Saquon does will determine the future of that running back position.”
