Future Penn State wrestlers dominated the U20 men’s freestyle Pan-American championships. Today’s newsstand starts there. Three Class of 2024 signees and one Class of 2025 verbal commitment took gold in the tune-up event for September’s U20 World Championships. Junior PJ Duke won the 70 kilogram title. And, high school grads Luke Lilledahl (57 kilograms), Zack Ryder (79 kilograms), and Connor Mirasola (92 kilograms) all won gold in one of their final prep-level International freestyle events before arriving for good in State College. Mirasola was the tournament’s ‘Golden Boot’ winner as the outstanding wrestler of the event.
“He defeated every wrestler in his six-man round-robin bracket by way of technical fall without giving up a point, outscoring his opponents by a combined 51-0 score,” Richard Immel writes for USA Wrestling. “Mirasola didn’t have a match extend beyond the first period.”
All told, USA Wrestling swept the 10 weight classes and compiled a 37-0 record at the tournament. Eight of the 10 Americans also did not surrender a point.

Quote of the day
“The spring practice showed me a lot about the team’s character. They were nothing but 100 percent [the whole time]. They were hitting hard, real hard. I get that it was a scrimmage day for them, but from what I saw, their physicality was on a whole different level.
“During some of the visit, Coach [James] Franklin showed us how the contracts work with where you are drafted and how much players make. Also, the camp was just a lot of good work.”
