Penn State wrestling does not often have Big 12 teams on its annual dual meet schedule. That made it intriguing to see Wyoming listed on the 2024-2025 slate for head coach Carl Sanderson’s team. The Cowboys, who are a top 30 team and No. 26 in InterMat’s team dual rankings, and No. 1 Nittany Lions will meet for the first time in both program’s storied history on Sunday. The match was previously set to be held at Rec Hall but will move to the Bryce Jordan Center across campus since an NCAA women’s volleyball event is now happening at the same time inside of the regular home Penn State wrestling venue. It will start at 1 pm ET. Big Ten Network Plus will stream the video feed. And, the Penn State Sports Network radio call will be available, as well.

I didn’t realize that we haven’t faced them, so that’s pretty cool,” Penn State associate head coach Cody Sanderson said Monday. “And frankly, we were trying to find a date, and I just couldn’t find any other opponents. An acquaintance of mine said, ‘hey, what about Wyoming?’ I know he reached out and got back to us right away. Said, yeah. let’s work it out. And we’re really excited to get a team in here from out west. And we’re working on getting back up there next year.“

Penn State has yet to lock in a trip to Wyoming for a dual next year. But that is expected to happen.

Will the best Penn State-Wyoming matchup of the day happen?

Fans are hoping to see No. 7 Cowboy Jore Volk, a junior, wrestle Penn State freshman Luke Lilledahl in the dual’s 125-pound bout. But, after missing a tournament last weekend, it’s unclear if the Wyoming standout will be in the lineup.

“We’ve had some communication with the program,” Sanderson said. “Hopefully he’s able to wrestle That’s probably the most exciting match for me coming up. But if we don’t get it, it’s still good opportunity to see Luke get out there and continue to develop.”

Penn State is expecting to have its full starting lineup healthy and ready to go for one of its final non-conference duals of the regular a season. It will go to the Collegiate Wrestling Duals, a three match event, next weekend. Then it transitions into Big Ten matches in January.
