Penn State tweets of the day
We start with results from three Penn State wrestlers at the NWCA All-Star match in Austin, Tex. on Tuesday night.
Heavyweight Greg Kerkvliet led off the Lions’ three-man contingent at the exhibition event. After dropping his previous three collegiate meetings with rival Tony Cassioppi of Iowa, the Penn State two-time All-American finally beat the Hawkeye. He led 2-1 after one, 5-3 after two, and scored a takedown plus a riding time point to secure a satisfying 8-5 decision.
Then, at 184 pounds, two-time NCAA champ Aaron Brooks topped Northern Iowa’s Parker Keckeisen 12-8 in a battle of InterMat’s No. 1 and No. 2 ranked wrestlers in that weight class, respectively. The Panther scored a late takedown to make the final score closer than the bout indicated. Brooks was secure throughout and wrestled an impressive and aggressive match with Cael Sanderson and Casey Cunningham in his corner.

Finally, in the marquee bout of the night, Carter Starocci scored a second period escape and then rode out Mehki Lewis in the third period to win 2-0. He also beat the Virginia Tech Hokie in last year’s NCAA Final at 174 pounds.
In other news, Penn State offered Class of 2024 running back Duke Watson. The 6-foot, 185-pound Class of 2024 recruit from Forsyth, Ga., is a four-star according to On3’s rankings. The Lions are the first Big Ten team to enter the mix. But, a few other Power Five programs also have extended offers already.
Finally, for this section, Penn State is still at No. 11 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings. It was possible head coach James Franklin’s team would move into the top 10 for the first time since 2019. But, that opportunity will have to wait at least one more week.

Quote of the day
“I think he’s going to come in at Penn State and be pretty ready to go. It looks like he’s added some good size, too. Compared to some other tight ends, we never had a ton of exposure with him when it comes to camps and other things, but when you look at his video and what he showed as a senior, I think it’s justified moving him up.”
