Penn State wrestling starter suffers injury at Big Ten tournament

Penn State wrestling redshirt freshman Joshua Barr injury defaulted out of his consolation bracket semifinal on Sunday at the Big Ten Championships. The Nittany Lion appeared to injure his left leg early in a 197-pound bout with Isaiah Salazar of Minnesota. He tried to continue but could not. And, he was ultimately helped off the mat by a PSU staff member. The Golden Gopher led 4-0 at the time of the stoppage. It came just 1:07 into the match.
Barr is almost certainly going to injury default out of the fifth place match. However, that is not confirmed as of 3:20 pm ET on Sunday. The final session starts at 5:30 pm ET. Six Penn State wrestlers are in the finals. Three others will wrestle for third.
Lions coach Cael Sanderson will speak with reporters in Evanston, where the tournament is at Northwestern, once the final session concludes.
What’s next for Penn State?
Barr is already one of the 10 Penn State starters who qualified for the national tournament. That takes place March 20-22 in Philadelphia at the Wells Fargo Center. Seeds for the event come out Wednesday. Barr will get one at 197 pounds. Whether or not he will be able to wrestle, though, is unclear. He will surely be evaluated by the team’s training staff, which is led by Dan Monthley, in the hours and days ahead.
