Recap: Penn State wrestling has team lead, seven of eight into quarters at NCAA Championships after session two

Penn State wrestling has seven of nine competitors alive in the championship bracket of the NCAA Championships after session two. How did the Lions perform Thursday night? Read on to learn more.

10:23 — Greg Kerkvliet wraps up a seven-for-eight effort by Penn State in the championship bracket by beating AJ Nevills of South Dakota State by major decision, 14-2.

9:56 — Max Dean will not repeat at NCAAs. He loses to Nebraska’s Silas Allred, who beat him in the Big Ten finals, 7-2 in the second round of nationals. Dean had a few good, deep shots but could not finish them. The 197-pound Nittany Lion senior is off to the consolation bracket.

9:42 — Aaron Brooks wins by fall in the second round. He caught and dropped Will Feldkamp with a second left in the second period to win in 4:59. He’s into the quarters at 184 pounds.

9:24 — Penn State has its first wrestler eliminated from the NCAA Tournament. Alex Facundo dropped a 12-2 major decision to fourth-seeded Julian Rameriez of Cornell at 165 pounds. It’s the Lions’ first loss of the second session.

9:14 — Carter Starocci makes Penn State five for five in the second round. He beats No. 17 Donnell Washington 4-0 with riding time in a dominating performance at 174 pounds.

8:52 — Freshman Levi Haines gets a late takedown and beats No. 15 Jacob Wright of Wyoming by decision, 8-2. It was a workmanlike effort that accumulated about 1:42 in riding time. Penn State is now 4-for-4 in the second round.

8:24 — Penn State has its third quarterfinalist. No. 12 Shayne Van Ness was the aggressor early and smart late to upset No. 5 Paniro Johnson 14-8. Tremendous match for the 149-pound Nittany Lion.

8:04 — Beau Bartlett is into the quarters for Penn State. He beats Clay Carlson of South Dakota State 3-2 in a second round match at 141 pounds.

7:28 — Penn State has its first semifinalist. Roman Bravo-Young beats Brady Palmer 5-2 with 2:36 in riding time at 133 pounds.

7:17 — Roman Bravo-Young kicks things off for Penn State in about five minutes.

6:40 p.m. — It will be a bit until No. 13 Alex Facundo takes the mat opposite No. 4 Julian Rameriez of Cornell in consolation bracket action. We’ll update with an approximate time when available.
