Penn State wrestling recap: NCAA Championships session one

Penn State went eight for nine in the first session of the NCAA Championships. Read on to see how they did it.

How to watch Penn State in session one

ESPNU is showing select matches starting at Noon ET. Penn State should be featured prominently. The television window is slated to run until 3:30 p.m.

Those hoping to ensure they do not miss any Nittany Lion in action will want to visit ESPN+. ESPN’s streaming arm will allow viewers to flip around mat-by-mat.

133 pounds: No. 1 Roman Bravo Young, Penn State vs. No. 33 Ethan Oakley, App State

141 pounds: No. 6 Beau Bartlett, PSU vs. No. 27 Shannon Hanna, Campbell

149 pounds: No. 12 Shayne Van Ness, Penn State vs. No. 21 Ethen Miller, Maryland

157 pounds: No. 2 Levi Haines, PSU vs. No. 31 Ashton Eyler, Lock Haven

Rolling updates: Penn State at Session One of the NCAA Championships

3:21 — Greg Kerkvliet stops Hayden Copass by fall in 34 seconds. Penn State went eight in nine in this session and is now done until tonight.

3:06 — Max Dean tops Levi Hopkins of Campbell by decision, 6-1. He’s through to round two, where he’ll face Nebraska’s Silas Allred, who just beat him at Big Tens.

2:44 — Penn State has another wrestler through to the second round. Aaron Brooks beats Matthew Waddell of Chatanooga 13-4 with 3:43 in riding time. It’s another bonus point in the team race for the Nittany Lions.

2:21 — Carter Starocci is into the second round. He pins his opponent, John Worthing, of Clarion at 174 pounds at the 1:21 mark of the first period.

2:11 — Alex Facundo falls at 165 pounds to Pitt’s Holden Heller 5-3. He is the first Penn State wrestler into the consolation bracket.

2:00 — Two-seed Levi Haines is into the second round. He beats No. 31 Ashton Eyler of Lock Haven 10-3 with plenty of riding time at 157 pounds.

1:36 — No. 5 Paniro Johnson of Arizona State wins in tiebreaker. So, he’ll take on Van Ness in round two at 149 tonight. Levi Haines wrestles next in 10-15 minutes or so.

Updates: 133-149

1:27 — We have our first ‘how do you do’ call from Jeff Byers. Shayne Van Ness trailed 9-1 entering the third period. He became the aggressor, closed to within 12-9, and then decked No. 21 Ethen Miller of Maryland in 6:26 to stay in the championship bracket at 149.

1:20 — Roman Bravo-Young is into the second round. He beat Ethan Oakley of App State by major decision, 13-2, with 4:37 in riding time.

1:14 — With 1:46 in riding time and a late takedown, Beau Bartlett is a winner by decision, 8-2, over No. 27 Shannon Hanna of Campbell in the first round at 141 pounds.

1:02 — Penn State about to get rolling here in five minutes or so with Beau Bartlett and Roman Bravo-Young soon set to take the mat.

12:49 — We have our first Penn State mat assignment. No. 6 Beau Bartlett, PSU vs. No. 27 Shannon Hanna, Campbell is coming up on mat four in 10 minutes or so.

12:37 — We are still awaiting our first Penn State mat assignment of the tournament.

12:14 — Carter Starocci has his opponent in the opening round. No. 33 John Worthing of Clarion scored a 6-4 win over No. 32 Will Miller of Appalachian State. The 174-pound Nittany Lion already beat Worthing by technical fall this year.

12:13 — Roman Bravo-Young has his first-round opponent. He’ll face No. 33 Ethan Oakley of Appalachian State. He beat No. 32 McGuire Midkiff of North Dakota State 5-3 in a 133-pound pigtail bout.

Updates will begin as soon as the first Nittany Lion takes the mat. There will be a delay. Pigtail matches must end kick things off, then the championship bracket first-round action begins. We’ll provide an updated time for Roman Bravo-Young to lead the way for the Lions here when it is available.
