Penn State wrestling recap from NCAA Wrestling Tournament session two

Penn State is off and running in session two of the NCAA Wrestling Championships.

The Nittany Lions have nine competitors alive as the evening begins. Seven of them are in the second round of the winners’ bracket. Two others, then, will start their journey in the consolation bracket.

We’ll have frequent updates here throughout the night as the action unfolds inside of Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Mich.

PSU held the lead in the team race after session one. With 115 points, they led Michigan and Iowa, who were tied for second with 112.5 points.

125 pounds: No. 16 Drew Hildebrandt, Penn State vs. No. 33 Logan Ashton, Stanford (consolation)

133 pounds: No.1 Roman Bravo-Young, PSU vs. No. 16 Josh Koderhandt, Navy

141 pounds: No. 1 Nick Lee, Penn State vs. No. 16 Quinn Kiner, Rider

149 pounds: No. 13 Beau Bartlett, PSU vs. No. 4 Sammy Sasso, Ohio State

157 pounds: No. 16 Brady Berge, Penn State vs. No 33 Derek Holschlag, Northern Iowa

174 pounds: No. 1 Carter Starocci, PSU vs. No. 16 Adam Kemp, Cal Poly

184 pounds: No. 2 Aaron Brooks, Penn State vs. No. 15 Hunter Bolen, Virginia Tech

197 pounds: No. 1 Max Dean, PSU vs. No. 17 Jay Aiello, Virginia

285 pounds: No. 4 Greg Kerkvliet, Penn State vs. No. 13 Tate Omdorff, Ohio State

Rolling Penn State updates from consolation bracket

9:55 p.m.: Brady Berge closes out session two for Penn State with a major decision. He beat Derek Holschlag of Northern Iowa 15-7 to stay alive in the consolation bracket. That’s it for Thursday.

9:20 p.m.: Drew Hildebrandt keeps his season alive as the Penn State wrestler beats Stanford’s Logan Ashton 3-1 in his first consolation bracket match.

Rolling updates from session two, championship bracket

9 p.m.: Penn State has three more quarterfinalists. At 184, top-seeded Aaron Brooks beat Hunter Bolen of Virginia Tech by major decision, 9-0. Then, at 197, Max Dean fended off a very game Jay Aiello of Virginia to win 4-2 with 1:31 in riding time. Finally, at heavyweight, Greg Kerkvliet netted a 10-1 major decision over Tate Omdorff of Ohio State.

8:33 p.m.: Carter Starocci is back in the NCAA quarterfinals. He beats Cal Poly’s Adam Kemp by decision, 10-4, in the second round of the 174-pound bracket. Penn State now has three quarterfinalists so far. Roman Bravo-Young and Nick Lee are also in.

8 p.m.: A HUGE bracket shakeup just happened at 141 pounds. No. 15 Kizhan Clarke from North Carolina stuns No. 2 Jaydin Eierman of Iowa 4-2 in sudden victory. It was expected that the Hawkeye could meet Nick Lee’s in the final. That will no longer be the case.

7:57 p.m.: No. 4 Sammy Sasson beats Penn State’s Beau Bartlett 6-4 at 149 pounds. Plenty of fight from the Nittany Lion. He’s into the consolation bracket and will return to action Friday morning.

7:45 p.m.: Nick Lee is off to the quarters. He topped Quinn Kiner of Rider by decision, 9-2, with over two minutes of riding time.

7:30 p.m.: Roman Bravo-Young kicked things with a pin in the second round at 133 pounds. He decked Navy’s Josh Koderhandt of Navy to become the first PSU wrestler to qualify for Friday morning’s quarterfinals.
