Penn State wrestling wraps up its time at the Collegiate Wrestling Duals on Tuesday night in New Orleans opposite Iowa State. Both teams were perfect throughout a pair of matches during Monday’s opening night. The Lions blasted Central Michigan 50-3 before topping North Carolina 37-3. The Cyclones, meanwhile, beat Oregon State 26-6 and Cornell 18-13.

“I know they got a lot of young guys that are energetic,” Lions associate head coach Cody Sanderson told the Penn State Sports Network Monday night when asked about Iowa State.

“They have some attitude, and they feel like they’re supposed to be out there and be on top. So those are fun teams to wrestle. We’re really looking forward to it. There’ll be some big bouts tomorrow.”

What will the top bouts be?

Penn State figures to face more resistance tonight than it did in either of Monday’s two matchups. Iowa State coach Kevin Dresser got creative with his lineup in the Cornell match, as he bumped up his upperweights one spot to secure a victory. He will likely stick to the traditional Cyclones lineup against the Lions. However, it will very likely depend on how things go early.

As you can see above, plenty of ranked matchups are on the card. Van Ness has been terrific so far as a first-year starter. Now, he will get to showcase where he is against one of the nation’s best wrestlers in Johnson. The same goes for Facundo at 165 pounds, where Carr will be an immense challenge. While there is uncertainty about which Iowa State grapplers will fill 184, 197, and heavyweight tonight, those bouts will be appointment viewing for wrestling fans, as well.

Penn State is the overall favorite in this match. But, expect it to be the team’s closest match of the season to date.
