Penn State news, notes, and updates for May 30 include James Franklin’s spot in a new set of coach rankings plus much more.

It’s time to dive into Tuesday’s top tweets and headlines about the Nittany Lions and college athletics.

Penn State tweets of the day

We start with coach rankings. National college football writer Bill Bender has put out his annual list of how college leaders stack up. In full, he ranked 133 coaches. James Franklin, who is the tenth-year leader of the Lions, checked in at No. 13. That was up four spots from a year ago.

“That’s the shuffle expected given the results,” Bender writes. “Penn State went 11-11 in 2020-21, and that sandwiched around 11-win seasons in 2019 and 2022. Franklin is under contract through 2031, and expectations are high in Happy Valley after last year’s Rose Bowl victory.

“Penn State continues to struggle against Ohio State and Michigan. Franklin is 4-14 against the Big Ten East powers. Will that change in 2023?”

In other news, current Penn State quarterback Drew Allar and future passer Ethan Grunkemeyer, who is a Class of 2024 commit, recently worked out together in Ohio with their shared trainer, Brad Maendler. The two will share a roster together next season. But, as summer begins, they are working on preparing for their second college season and final high school one, respectively.

Quote of the day

“I think number one, we got a chance to be better on the O-line, we got a chance to be better at running back, we got a chance to be better at tight end. We have a question mark at wide receiver. I saw some things this spring to get excited about, but not ready to stamp them yet.”
