Penn State head football coach James Franklin spoke with the media on Tuesday afternoon. As always, Blue White Illustrated Franklin whisperer Nate Bauer is here to discuss what the head coach said and what he meant. Check out our recap of Franklin’s press conference and what to expect this week when Penn State takes on Iowa in the 2023 White Out Game.

Penn State stats aren’t great, but the team is

Several of the questions for Franklin on Tuesday centered around star players not showing up the way that fans and media expected in the stat sheet. Franklin says that the team approach doesn’t always equate to those players getting numbers. But make no mistake; they’re playing well according to the head coach.

“I think the other things our guys have understood that we spend a lot of time talking about, as well as had some NFL scouts talk about, true football people, the stats are important, but they’re watching how you play the game and are you doing your job,” Franklin sad.

Despite the preseason hype, players like Nick Singleton, Kaytron Allen, Adisa Isaac, Chop Robinson, and even Kalen King haven’t been the center of attention. Franklin says that his team is playing selflessly and that is their secret to success through three games.

“How many times does the defensive end get a tackle for a loss because the D tackle spiked and got penetration in the B gap? The D tackle may get no credit in the stat form, but everybody knows that that D tackle created the tackle for a loss for the other D tackle or for the defensive end.

For us, it’s studying football and understanding how did you grade out and how well did you play. Some weeks that’s going to equate to a ton of stats, some weeks, that’s not.”
