Penn State head coach James Franklin and his team opened its season in style Saturday night, defeating West Virginia 38-15. The Nittany Lions weren’t perfect on the night, but the result was also never really in question, as the Mountaineers played from behind from midway through the second quarter onward.

Sophomore quarterback Drew Allar starred in his first collegiate start, completing over 70 percent of his passes for 325 yards and three touchdowns. That performance earned him Big Ten Player of the Week honors on Tuesday.

The Nittany Lions’ rushing attack was also strong, as running back Nicholas Singleton led the team with 70 yards rushing on just 13 carries with one touchdown. Kaytron Allen added another 51 yards on 10 carries. As a team, Penn State finished with 146 rushing yards on the night.

Defensively, the Nittany Lions held West Virginia to just over 300 yards total on the night. The Mountaineers were successful on just 4 of 14 third-down attempts. Quarterback Garrett Greene was also limited to just 162 yards passing on 16 of 27 attempts. Linebacker Curtis Jacobs shined defensively, leading the Nittany Lions with 10 tackles, including one sack and a tackle for loss.
