Praise for Penn State quarterback Drew Allar continues to roll in as camp approaches: Newsstand

Penn State football news, notes, and updates for July 2 include new Big Ten quarterback rankings that prominently feature Drew Allar. USA Today’s Paul Myerberg puts the Nittany Lion atop his annual rankings of the league’s best passers.
“Allar won’t struggle for motivation after his junior year ended with a devastating interception in the team’s CFP semifinal game against Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl,” Myerberg writes. “He’ll be in his second season with offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki and surrounded by a top-notch offensive line and one of the nation’s top collections of skill talent, especially in the backfield. Look for Allar to have a hugely productive year and contend for the Heisman Trophy.”
Illinois’ quarterback Luke Altmyer is No. 2 on the list. Adds On3’s Pete Nakos in his own breakdown of the conference’s quarterbacks entering the 2025 season:
“Allar flashed in the CFP, ultimately picking another year in State College over the NFL. Franklin and his staff have now given him a wide receiver corps that will rank near the top of the Big Ten.”
Allar leads a Nittany Lion attack that has a handful of returning starters up front, seniors Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen back in the backfield, and three new receivers in a position group that saw a transfer portal overhaul this offseason. Penn State opens its 2025 season opposite Nevada on Aug. 30. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS.

Quote of the day
“From an evaluation standpoint, it was good to see him in person because he missed so much time in his junior year. He came in late in the season really played a lot of H-Back, so it was hard to evaluate his junior season. I would kind of classify that as a wash from an evaluation standpoint. We had a lot of really good O-Linemen have great junior years. So for us, it was helpful to see him in person and see where he’s at heading into his senior season.
“He’s one that we’ll be watching closely on senior film. I’m excited to see what he looks like when he’s full-go. I think this is a good appetizer for what we could see from him as a senior.”
