Recapping Penn State Signing Day, James Franklin's first news conference of 2022: Newsstand
Penn State had its busiest day of February on Wednesday.
The month is young but it’s hard to imagine a more jam-packed day will be on the horizon in the second month of 2022. The Nittany Lions welcomed two signees and head coach James Franklin met the media.
Today’s newsstand recaps how everything unfolded and looks at other news to know. Here are the top tweets and headlines about Penn State and college football on Feb. 3.

We start with a recap of signing day.
The Lions netted a pair of prospects to close out their Class of 2022. Lackawanna College safety Tyrece Mills signed as expected after waiting instead of doing so during the early signing period. But, the big surprise came when Vega Ioane, a three-star On3 Consensus lineman from Graham, Wash., picked PSU in the middle of Franklin’s news conference.
Ioane stands 6-foot-4, 330 pounds. He will arrive on campus later this year. Washington, of course, was the other finalist and once held his commitment. But, a late push by offensive line coach Phil Trautwein, special teams coordinator Stacy Collins, and head coach James Franklin, among others, pushed Penn State across the finish line first.

As for Franklin, he covered a bunch of topics besides just Mills and Ioane. The Penn State coach made clear that Sean Clifford would be the team’s starting quarterback entering spring practice. He also discussed the need to adapt in the ever-changing college football world as it relates to name, image, and likeness, plus other off-field areas.

Quote of the day
“I think that’s something that not only am I preaching to the administration and the fans, and when I answer your guys’ questions, but I’m also talking to myself about that as well. Whether you totally agree with the transfer portal or whether you totally agree with NIL or whether you totally agree with these things, the reality is, you have to embrace them, I have to embrace them.
“And then once I’ve embraced them, I got to do a great job of educating and explaining to all the people that have a hand in Penn State football, whether it’s internal to Lasch Building or outside of it, that they understand what we’re competing against currently.”
