Penn State defeats Purdue in a wild finish, 35-31. Film analyst and host Thomas Frank Carr breaks down the game and takes questions on what happened in a wild second half between the Nittany Lions and Boilermakers. So check out the replay of the BWI Live post-game show if you didn’t catch it last night.

Sean Clifford, saves his job and Penn State season?

The obvious place to start for the Nittany Lions is the late-game heroics from quarterback Sean Clifford. Is it fair to be critical of the sixth-year passer after he won the game on the final drive? T-Frank struggles with the duality of that moment and how poorly Clifford performed before that moment.

But from there, T-Frank struggles to bring fans a cohesive game narrative because players who stood out had vastly different performances during the first and second half of the game. For example, he discusses the night that Joey Porter Jr. had struggled early and came back with a vengeance to make plays in the second half.

He touches on the idea that the running game wasn’t a product of overly poor blocking by the Penn State offensive line but the runners not staying on their feet. He also takes fans’ questions throughout the show to get feedback from an exhilarated but exhausted fan base.

Fans lead the discussion about players they thought played well during the game, and T-Frank offers defensive end Chop Robinson as the defensive lineman that stood out the most, even before his game-winning sack.

Right tackle issues raise questions for next week

One of the most significant changes in the game came at right tackle. Starter Caedan Wallace could not finish the game for Penn State because he was struggling to block in pass protection. Will Wallace retain his job going forward? T-Frank wonders how that situation will play out after the veteran tackle finds himself on the bench.

With only four throws in the game, Penn State freshman quarterback Drew Allar made a positive impact on only a handful of plays. After watching Allar, T-Frank changes his view of how the Nittany Lions should handle the five-star passer this fall.

Another discussion T-Frank has with Penn State fans is about the takeaways coming out of a four-point victory over Purdue in a hostile environment. How do fans feel about that game? Should they be encouraged? Or is this a sign of trouble to come later in the season?
