It’s been just 10 days since Penn State picked up a commitment from our-star edge rusher Chaz Coleman. Now, he’ll once again become a player we’re likely talking about down the stretch, as Warren, Ohio, native picked up an offer from in-state powerhouse Ohio State on Wednesday.

Listed at 6-foot-4, 220 pounds, Coleman has emerged as one of the region’s fastest-rising prospects this fall. He didn’t earn a Power Four offer until August, when Ole Miss offered him as a tight end a day before his season opener. However, once everyone started to see the impact he was having as an edge rusher, which he hadn’t played until this season, schools across the country took notice.

Visits to Kentucky and Michigan State grabbed his attention, but he also took a visit to Ohio State back in September for the game against Marshall.

“It was great,” Coleman told Lettermen Row. “There was a great atmosphere at the game. Every time they scored, it got loud. I felt like I shouldn’t leave Ohio.”

But without an offer from the Buckeyes, his official visit to Penn State for the White Out game ultimately earned the Nittany Lions a commitment. Time will tell how much that impacts Coleman, but it should also be noted that Philadelphia native Zahir Mathis decommitted from the Buckeyes earlier this week, giving Ohio State a reason to push hard these final two weeks.

He played really well this season and he’s still so raw,” said Harding head coach Matt Richardson shortly after Coleman committed. “He hasn’t even scratched the surface. Once he gets his weight up and learns how to use his hands and all that, the sky’s the limit.”

His play as an edge rusher, which is also the position Ohio State is recruiting him to play, earned the attention of On3 Scouting Director Charles Power as well. After just a few games of film, Coleman was promoted to the On300. He’s now ranked No. 191 nationally and 19th overall as an edge rusher.

“Chaz Coleman is a twitched-up jumbo athlete,” Power told BWI after his commitment. “I think the athleticism is where you have to start when you’re talking about what he brings to the table. He plays all over the field for his high school team. He winds up at quarterback on offense and then as a pass rusher and sometimes an off-ball linebacker on defense. Immediately, you see the high-end movement skills in every capacity.

“I think what jumps out to me about Chaz Coleman is just how loose and fluid he is, in addition to being explosive. You can just tell he’s a natural athlete. He changes directions really well and shows signs of outstanding bend around the edge when he’s rushing the passer. He can really dip his shoulder well and get underneath offensive linemen. I think that’s really encouraging.
